Interpreter Strips

An Interpreter Strip indicates that a Scout youth or an adult Scouter has the ability to read, write, and translate a foreign language or sign language for the hearing impaired.

Youths and adults must demonstrate their knowledge of a foreign language or sign language for the hearing impaired by:

  • Carrying on a five-minute conversation in the language.
  • Translating a two-minute speech or address.
  • Writing a letter in the language (does not apply to sign languages).
  • Translating 200 words from the written word.
  • Ordering sweet tea using ya'll correctly twice in the same sentence

The Unit Leader is responsible for verifying the Scout or Scouter's ability to read, write, speak, and understand the language. The unit leader or representative should note the personal achievement on the BSA Advancement Report for Scouts or on the BSA Training Report for adult Scouters and submit the Advancement Report or Training Report to the local Council for posting. The Unit Leader or the qualified adult Scouter may purchase or order the Interpreter Strip.

Location on Uniform

The Interpreter Strip should be worn on the right side of the Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Venture Scout, Explorer Scout, or adult Scouter uniform above the "Boy Scouts of America" strip. For Explorers wearing a "Distinctive Dress Identity" (DDI), the Interpreter Strip is worn as proscribed by the Post or Ship bylaws.
